Glossary

We were curious about the people and places Ellis refers to in his songs, so we searched the Net and came up with definitions and links to the ones we weren't familiar with.  If there are references you're not familiar with and you'd like an answer email us: everythingsbrokn@hotmail.com.  The terms are listed by album in song order. We've changed this page around a bit. Click on the album  to get to the different references. We thought this would save some scrolling.  Let us know if you love it or hate it. We like feedback, if it makes sense we just may take your suggestion. :)

Songs from Nowhere - Songs not on an album... yet.

"Did Galileo Pray?" - Ptolemy, Copernicus & Galileo

This is one of the new songs that’s not on an album. If you go to the Projects Page, you’ll see the link for the Kennedy Center concert in DC and a link for the RealPlayer that you’ll need to download the performance. It’s a beautiful song. Plus you get to learn about retrograde motion in this one. See? Fun AND Educational! * grin *

"Did Galileo Pray?" - The Milky Way

This is not the candy bar, okay people? Try not to think about chocolate bars so much!

"Did Galileo Pray?" - The Church & The Pope

What Pope reference would be complete without visiting the Vatican? It’s got Michaelangelo so how bad can it be?

"Maria’s Beautiful Mess"

Ellis has said this song contains references to "Hotel California". Lisa and I have found a few. I hesitate to name a number because we’ve never actually sat down to seriously tally the references. If you find more than six let us know. I think that’s generally the amount we’ve come up with.

"Maria’s Beautiful Mess" - Ella Fitzgerald

I am a musical neophyte in the jazz world. Luckily, a friend of mine really likes Ella so I get to borrow CD’s and educate myself!

 "Everything’s Broken" – Hollywood

This is a very emotional song. I’d say it’s a downer but there’s a positive message of empowerment in it. At least in my little mind there is! J Ellis said he has a couple of female friends that go to movies alone to work out their problems which is what inspired the opening line of this song. So let’s go to the movies!

"Martyr’s Lounge"

You have to love a song that contains so many references to so many famous & infamous people. Besides, this song ROCKS!

JFK, Marilyn Monroe, Joan of Arc, Jacques Cousteau, Kurt Cobain, Gandhi.

There is also a very funny line mentioning John Lennon with Gandhi. But since we already have links for John Lennon, we figured we’d make you work and scroll back for them. LOL.

"Ain’t It the Strangest World?" – New York City

This is a link for a day in the life of a New York City cab driver. Since the song starts off with a baby being born in a cab, I thought this would be appropriate. Pay the fare.

"Seize the Day" – Tom Jones

All I know about Tom Jones is that my mom owned one of his eight tracks in the mid-Seventies. I was five and * gasp* I think I liked him. But I’m much better now. * grin *

"Seize the Day" – Nat King Cole

I like Nat King Cole. We have a Christmas album of his. His voice is just beautiful. So look and learn about him. You haven’t clicked the link yet?
