In recent days, we have revisited our policy on bulk e-mail, otherwise
known as unsolicited e-mail or spam. Used properly, bulk e-mail is a viable
commercial vehicle for generating interest in a product or service.
Unfortunately, many people who employ this technique use it in a manner that
is incompatible with proper commercial standards. As a company, we do not
reject spam per se. We do, however, reject the types of e-mail that we
believe to be associated with 'bad' spam:
- Messages with illegal return addresses, so that recipients cannot
request to be removed from a mailing list.
- Messages that are relayed from outside domains, so malicious senders
from other networks can obfuscate their whereabouts (make a message appear
to originate from Angstrom when, in fact, it does not).
Angstrom does not condone irresponsible bulk e-mail from its customers.
We are, however, charitable. Our policy in the past has been to warn
customers on the first offense. Disregard for the warning typically results
in termination of the service contract. This policy has been successful on
the few occasions that a member has attempted to spam.
We are still debating whether blocking domains that spam is a beneficial
technique for stemming the tide of unsolicited e-mail. At this time, it is
not clear to us that all spam is bad to all users. The annoying unsolicited
e-mail to one is treasure to another. This is why, to date, we have not
begun the wholesale blockage of e-mail from domains. We are currently
experimenting with techniques to apply e-mail blockage that is tailored to
each user's individual requirements.
We do keep track of e-mail abuse. In the past we have not had a specific
e-mail address to deal with this. Sending mail to
postmaster@angstrom.net with a copy of the message as evidence of the abuse and a brief description of the situation will give us the information we need to look into the
situation. In keeping with de facto standards of the Internet, we will also
accept mail at abuse@angstrom.net for the same purpose.
Angstrom is committed to delivering the best possible Internet service.
Our current standing policy seems to be a pragmatic compromise between
privacy and honest commercial endeavor. We are interested in hearing what
our customers have to say about this controversial topic. Please send
comments to policies@angstrom.net. We look forward to hearing from you.
